Villages are glued together through history, agriculture, art, music, dance, food, wine, education, groups etc – i.e. its own unique culture.
Vital villages (maintaining their own culture) will become more important over time, when urbanization lets people forget their roots and lose their connection with nature, with themselves, with others and with society.

*Winter in Stanford* Talk: Fynbos – diversity, fire & life

    18h30The Stanford Table

    The Stanford Table
    Sean Privett
Free talk and light meal available

The flora of the Cape is so diverse and so botanically unique that it has been defined as one of the World’s six floral kingdoms. Nowhere on Earth is there such staggering changes in plant species over such short distances. A flora subjected to wind, fire, the poorest of soils and yet home to some of the most delicate, beautiful and rare plants species seen on our planet. How does it all work, and why should we protect and cherish our unique floral heritage?

Sean Privett is a passionate fynbos ecologist and conservationist, who has spent the last 17 years working in fynbos conservation in the Stanford/Gansbaai region. He has a Master’s degree in Botany, is co-author of the Field guide to Grootbos Nature Reserve and the Walker Bay region, Director of the non-profit Grootbos Foundation and trustee of a number of conservation NGO’s in the region, he lives with his wife Michelle and two children on Witkrans Farm and runs the three day Fynbos Trail in the Walker Bay Fynbos Conservancy.

    Fynbos Trail Run

    7:00 am

For the first time runners have the opportunity to run this magnificent 30 km route (or one of two shorter routes) as part of the Funky Fynbos Festival that will be held on the 13 & 14 September 2014.

The route meanders through hidden pockets of indigenous forest alive with birds, to Tolkeinesque dells of dense lichens, tumbling waterfalls and streams and, you guessed it, through exquisite fynbos.

For the hard core trail runner there is the tough 30km route, usually hiked over three days. The run includes four relatively stiff climbs spread out along the route and runners will be treated to spectacular views from the summits of Swartkransberg, Pinnacle Peak, Grootberg and Windheuwel. The route includes plenty of custom made single track trail running including wooden board walks and ladders down to the Witvoetskloof waterfall and Stinkhoutsbos Forest on Flower Valley. The combination of spectacular Fynbos with fields of pincushions and proteas, shady forests, secret valleys and waterfall as well as the magnificent views along the route make this a must do for avid trail runners.

The 10 km route takes runners through the beautiful Flower valley, up over Windheuwel Peak with spectacular 3600 views of mountain and sea and then down through the Lomond vineyards back to the start/finish in the Uilkraals Valley.

There will also be a relatively flat 6 km circular route into Flower Valley.
